SHEATHE: Xenobiotic substances and heavy metals in the environment – a threat to health, ecosystems and development in Ghana

A  stakeholder meeting was held between members of the SHEATHE project (supervisors and students) and the executives of the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) on Wednesday 8th May, 2019.

The aim of the meeting was to share knowledge and experience as well as interview the executives and understand current state of miners and ASM operations, considering the ban of government on small-scale mining activities in the country.

Prior to the discussions, Godfred Darko (Project Coordinator) made a presentation on the background, aim, partners and scope of the SHEATHE Project. Findings made by the project so far on mining activities (soil and water analysis as well as interviews with local miners in selected project’s mining activities) were shared with the executives of GNASSM. The executives of GNASSM made important contributions to guide the project on specific hotspots and what to expect in future interviews.
